Dadasaheb Phalke Awardee – Actor, Producer
1972

Acted in India’s first talking picture ‘Alam Ara’ in 1931.
Developed his reputation as a fine actor on both stage and screen.
Created Prithvi Theatres in 1944, where he went on to create many plays.
Was the first to use the concept of modern professional urban theatre in Hindustani.
His sons Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor also became famous actors.
His performance as Alexander the Great in Sikandar (1941) and Emperor Akbar in Mughal-e-Azam (1960) were the best of his life.
Received Padma Bhushan in 1969 and Dada Saheb Phalke Award (posthumously) in 1972.
