1972
  • Acted in India’s first talking picture ‘Alam Ara’ in 1931.
  • Developed his reputation as a fine actor on both stage and screen.
  • Created Prithvi Theatres in 1944, where he went on to create many plays.
  • Was the first to use the concept of modern professional urban theatre in Hindustani.
  • His sons Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor also became famous actors.
  • His performance as Alexander the Great in Sikandar (1941) and Emperor Akbar in Mughal-e-Azam (1960) were the best of his life.
  • Received Padma Bhushan in 1969 and Dada Saheb Phalke Award (posthumously) in 1972.
