Fondly called ‘JP’ and popularly known as ‘Lok Nayak’.
Formed Congress Socialist Party along with his friends.
Took active part in Freedom Movement. Worked with Vinoba Bhave from 1954 to 1972 for Sarvodaya Movement.
Organized a Peace Mission in 1972 for the surrender of dacoits of Chambal Valley.
Was arrested during the ‘Emergency’ which was clamped by Indira Gandhi.
Awarded ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1999 posthumously.
