Was an active freedom fighter and close associate of Mahatma Gandhi.
Was jailed nine times between 1921 and 1945 for his political activities.
Was equally at home with the cultures of India and the West.
Aimed to make India a democratic socialist state, tolerant of all religions.
Was India’s Prime Minister from 1947 to 1964.
Was an advocate of scientific methods and modern technology.
Wrote several books of historical value e.g. India and the World, The Unity of India, The Discovery of India etc.
Loved children so much, that his birthday in India is celebrated as ‘Children’s Day’.
Was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1955.
