Joined Labour Movement and became President of All India Trade Union Congress.
Attended International Labour Conference at Geneva in 1927.
Attended Second Round Table Conference at London as workers’ representative in 1931-32.
Took an active part in ‘Quit India’ Movement in 1942.
Worked as High Commissioner in Ceylon in 1952. Appointed as Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Mysore.
Elected as Vice President in 1967 and as President in 1969 and remained in office till 1974.
Was awarded ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1975.
