Born in a non-musical family. His father was a wrestler. Hence he learnt music almost in secret.
Is a rare combination of innovator & traditionalist.
Has significantly expanded the expressive possibilities of North Indian Classical Flute through his masterful blowing technique.
Has made a mark as a hindi film music director along with Pandit Shivkumar Sharma forming a group called ‘Shiv-Hari’.
Has also combined with various world musicians at experimental music, including the famous group ‘Shakti’.
Has been awarded ‘Sangeet Natak Akademi Award’ (1984), ‘Padma Bhushan’ (1992) and ‘Padma Vibhushan’ (2000).
