He was a world renowned Ornithologist.
He received several awards like the Golden Ark of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Padma Bhushan (1958) & Padma Vibhushan (1976) from the Indian Government.
His timely intervention saved the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary and the Silent Valley National Park.
He authored numerous books on Indian Birds.
