India, a Union of States, is a Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic with a Parliamentary System of government. The Republic is governed in terms of the constitution, which was adopted by Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949 and came into force on 26 January 1950. At present, India comprises of 30 States and five union territories. The States Reorganization Act of 1956 was a primary force in reorganizing the boundaries of India's States. The Governors and Lieutenant-Governors of the States and Union Territories of India have similar powers and functions at the state level as that of the President of India at Union level. Governors exist in the States while Lieutenant-Governors exist in Union Territories. The Governors and Lieutenant-Governors are appointed by the President of India for a term of 5 years. They act as the nominal heads whereas the real power lies in the hands of the Chief Ministers of the States and the Chief Ministers' Council of Ministers. Here an effort is made to present the autographs of as many Governors and Chief Ministers of States as possible. |
