India has always appreciated the outstanding contribution of various personalities in their respective fields.

Apart from Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan or Padma Vibhushan decorations given to Civilians for their exemplary contribution, there are Awards of Vir Chakra, Pram Vir Chakra given to soldiers for their bravery.

There are awards like International Gandhi Peace Prize given to individuals or institutions for their contributions towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Gandhian methods or Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding.

The Jnanpith Award is regarded as the highest literary award in India. It is awarded for the best creative literary writing by an Indian, in one of the languages included in the Eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution.

The Sahitya Akademi Awards are instituted in order to co-ordinate and encourage literary activities in all Indian languages, thereby contributing to the cultural unity of the country.
