- Took active part in 'Quit India' Movement (1942).
- Held various portfolios as Minister for Electricity, Education, Agriculture etc. from 1966 to 1974 in Central Government.
- Became the President of India from 1974 to 1977.
- 'Emergency' in India was clamped during his Presidentship.
