- Was profoundly impressed and influenced by Mahatma Gandhi.
- Was active in freedom movement and was a great freedom fighter.
- Was elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly of India, which was to shape the destiny of the nation.
- Was the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 1956.
- Became the President of the Congress Party in 1959.
- Was the Central Minister with different portfolios in the cabinet of Lal Bahadur Shastri & Indira Gandhi between 1964 to 1967.
- Was elected as Speaker of the 4th Lok Sabha (Parliament) in 1967 and he resigned from the political party of Congress to maintain independence and impartiality of the august office of Speaker.
- Was elected as the President of India in 1977 and he remained in office till 1982.
