- Served as Minister for Industries, Labour, Co-operation, Power, Transport etc. in the Madras State Government between 1957 to 1967.
- Was a member of Planning Commission from 1967 to 1971.
- Worked as Minister for Finance, Defence etc. in the Union Cabinet of Government of India.
- Worked as the Vice President of India from 1984 to 1987.
- Worked as President of India from 1987 to 1992.
