- Was the President of Shiromani Akali Dal and was sentenced 2 years of imprisonment for his activities in connection with the Gurudwara Reform Movement.
- Was the member of the Constituent Assembly of India.
- Was also the member of the Provisional Parliament from 1950-1952.
- Has worked as Deputy Speaker of the Parliament in First & Second Loksabha (1952-1962) & as Speaker of Third Loksabha (1962-1967).
- Led Indian Parliamentary Delegations to the Commenwealth Parliamentary Conferences in Lagos (Nigeria) in 1962, Kuala Lampur (Malaysia) in 1963 and on goodwill visits to USSR, Mongolia, UK, West Germany, Philippines and USA.
- Has worked as Governor of Rajasthan from 1967 to 1972.
- Wrote some books in English & Punjabi. Such as 'Sikhs Case', 'Russia as I saw it', 'Russia Today' etc.
- Was awarded honorary degree of LL.D. by the Punjab University, Patiala.
