• Was associated with Gandhiji in his struggle for the freedom of India.
• Was sent to jail in 1932, where he gave series of talks on Gita. These talks were published as the book 'Talks on the Gita'.
• In 1940 he was chosen by Gandhi to be the first Individual Satyagrahi against the British Rule.
• Was pioneer of 'Sarvodaya' and 'Bhoodan' movement.
• Was awarded 'Bharat Ratna' posthumously in 1983.
