- Took active interest in Trade Union Movement from 1948 to 1955.
- Received Indira Gandhi Award for National Understanding in 1987.
- Awarded Lenin Peace Prize in 1975.
- Awarded Jawaharlal Nehru award for International Understanding in 1991.
- Received Padma Vibhushan in 1992.
- Honoured with 'Bharat Ratna' in 1997.
