- Was born and brought up as Ramchandra Narayanji Dwivedi.
- Wrote first songs for the Bombay Talkies' film Kangan in 1939.
- His songs have inspired and continue to inspire millions of Indians spanning several generations.
- Is a creator of legendary song 'Aye Mere Vatan Ke Logo' which brought tears in the eyes of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru when it was sung by Lata Mangeshkar.
- Received best Film Lyricist Award in 1961, the Sangeet Natak Academy Award, the Film Journalist Association Award, the National Integration Award in 1993 and the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1998.
