• Joined Labour Movement and became President of All India Trade Union Congress.
• Attended International Labour Conference at Geneva in 1927.
• Attended Second Round Table Conference at London as workers' representative in 1931-32.
• Took an active part in 'Quit India' Movement in 1942.
• Worked as High Commissioner in Ceylon in 1952. Appointed as Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Mysore.
• Elected as Vice President in 1967 and as President in 1969 and remained in office till 1974.
• Was awarded 'Bharat Ratna' in 1975.
