- Has worked as Minister for Steel and Heavy Industry in Nehru's Cabinet and Minister for Food and Agriculture in Lal Bahadur Shastri's Cabinet.
- Spearheaded the 'Green Revolution' and made a great contribution in making India self-sufficient in the matter of food.
- Has also worked as the Finance Minister during 'Emergency'.
- Has worked as Deputy Chair-person of the Planning Commission of India.
- Was appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra in 1992.
- Headed 'Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan' and the 'Ramkrishna Mission' during various periods.
- Was awarded 'Bharat Ratna' in 1998.
