- Was an active freedom fighter and close associate of Mahatma Gandhi.
- Was jailed nine times between 1921 and 1945 for his political activities.
- Was equally at home with the cultures of India and the West.
- Aimed to make India a democratic socialist state, tolerant of all religions.
- Was India's Prime Minister from 1947 to 1964.
- Was an advocate of scientific methods and modern technology.
- Wrote several books of historical value e.g. India and the World, The Unity of India, The Discovery of India etc.
- Loved children so much, that his birthday in India is celebrated as 'Children's Day'.
- Was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1955.
