- Participated in freedom struggle and went to jail in 1942.
- Has the Parliamentary experience of four decades.
- Has many literary, artistic and scientific accomplishments to his credit.
- Has been a Member of the National Integration Council since 1961.
- During his tenure, a series of successful nuclear tests at Pokharan in May 1998 took place.
- Kargil war with Pakistan took place in his time and he successfully handled the situation in repulsing back the intruders from the Indian Soil.
- Became the Prime Minister of India from May 16 to June 1, 1996 and March 19, 1998 to May 22, 2004.
- Has been awarded Padma Vibhushan (1992) and Lokmanya Tilak Purskar and Govind Vallabh Pant Award for the Best Parliamentarian (1994).
