- Was the second Indian to get his doctorate in English literature from Cambridge.
- Translated Omar Khayyam's 'Rubaiyat' and Shakespeare's Macbeth and Othelo and also the Bhagvad Gita.
- Is famous for his poem 'Madhushala'.
- Is the father of Amitabh Bachchan, a superstar of Bollywood cinema.
- Received Sahitya Akademi Award in 1968.
- Was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1976.
- Was honoured with Saraswati Samman, the Sovietland Nehru Award and the Lotus Award of the Afro-Asian Writers' conference for his unique contribution to the world of letters.
