- Acted in India's first talking picture 'Alam Ara' in 1931.
- Developed his reputation as a fine actor on both stage and screen.
- Created Prithvi Theatres in 1944, where he went on to create many plays.
- Was the first to use the concept of modern professional urban theatre in Hindustani.
- His sons Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor also became famous actors.
- His performance as Alexander the Great in Sikandar (1941) and Emperor Akbar in Mughal-e-Azam (1960) were the best of his life.
- Received Padma Bhushan in 1969 and Dada Saheb Phalke Award (posthumously) in 1972.
