Sangeet Natak Akademi-India's National Akademi for music, dance and drama- is the first national level Academi of arts set up by the Government of India. The Indian education ministry set it up on May 31, 1952.

Since the inception, Akademi has been functioning as the apex body of performing arts in the country, preserving and promoting the vast intangible heritage of India's diverse culture expressed in the forms of music, dance and drama. It also works with, both, the governments and various art academies in different states and territories of the country. It establishes and maintains institutions and projects of national importance. It encourages, supports and subsidizes the work of institutions engaged in teaching, performing or promoting music, dance, or theatre.

The Akademi awards are the highest national recognition conferred on practicing artists. It includes an amount, a shawl and a Tamrapatra.
